The Modern Fly Fishing Journal
Welcome to the Modern Fly Fishing Journal
What is the Modern Fly Fishing Journal - A technical journal on reel design, materials, machining, and the future of fly fishing.
Fly fishing is changing.
Not because the old ways are wrong.
They are not.
The sport has deep roots. It was built by people who studied water, fish, weather, insects, tools, and timing. That part should never be lost.
But the tools are changing.
The materials are changing.
The way we measure performance is changing.
That is what this journal is about.
Modern Fly Fishing is a place where I will break down the technical side of the sport in a clear and useful way. No hype. No smoke. No overcomplicated talk just to sound smart.

I want this to become a design library.
A mechanical authority.
A place for real information about fly fishing reels, materials, machining, product design, and better ways to solve problems in the sport.

I have spent over 17 years in the manufacturing and design side of fishing reels. I have worked from the drafting table to programming CNC machines. I have machined parts, tested ideas, failed, refined, and built again. I have also fished these products in real places, under real pressure, around the world.
That mix matters.
Because a reel is not just a shape.
It is not just a finish.
It is not just a brand name.
A reel is a mechanical tool that has to earn trust.
Every material choice matters.
Every tolerance matters.
Every surface, bearing, drag part, port, screw, and handle shape has a job.

The goal is not to make something flashy.
The goal is to make something better.
In this journal, I will talk about the new-age developments happening in fly fishing and reel manufacturing. I will explain why certain materials are used. I will break down design changes, mechanical improvements, and the thinking behind our products.
We will look at strength-to-weight ratios.
Drag performance.
Machining methods.
Corrosion resistance.
Ergonomics.
Balance.
Spool geometry.
Line pickup.
Heat.
Pressure.
Wear.
Feel.

But we will keep it simple.
Because good design should make things easier to understand, not harder.
I also want to bring in trusted voices from the industry. Guides. Anglers. Builders. Designers. People who spend their lives on the water and know what works because they have tested it the hard way.
They will share tips, techniques, and field knowledge that help anglers improve. Not based on trends. Based on proof, time, and experience.
Modern fly fishing should be forward thinking.
It should be data driven.
It should respect tradition but not be trapped by it.
There are still problems in this niche industry that need to be solved. Some are mechanical. Some are educational. Some come from products being overbuilt in the wrong places and under-built where it matters most.
My goal is to help simplify those problems.
To explain the “why” behind better products.
To help anglers understand what they are holding in their hands.
To raise the standard for how reels are designed, built, tested, and talked about.
This journal is for the angler who wants to learn.
The builder who wants to improve.
The guide who depends on gear every day.
The customer who wants substance over style.
And the next generation of fly fishermen who will push this sport forward.
I believe better information creates better products.
Better products create better days on the water.
And better days on the water are what this is all about.
Welcome to Modern Fly Fishing.
